SASS Defense was started in 1997 by Dr. Ed Carney after he realized the strong need for women to know how to best protect themselves from violence in the shortest amount of time.  His original vision lives on in the thousands of women who have been SASS Defense trained.  These women are from the South Carolina Air and Army National Guard, Richland, Lexington, West Columbia, Cayce, Orangeburg County Law Enforcement, SWAT and SLED officers and the US Forestry Service. The University of South Carolina along with Columbia College host our courses for graduation credits, the Richland County Sheriff's Department facilitates our Compact Course for the public with SASS trained deputies and the YMCA is our second home for training moms, teenagers, sisters and girlfriends to defend themselves with skill and precision.  It is our passion, promise and mission to make the world safer one woman at a time
